At Wests Juniors we have a vibrant and active minis rugby program that is open to both boys and girls aged U6-U9. We pride ourselves on being a “game for all”, all shapes, all sizes, all abilities, and all genders.
Our U6-U9 age groups play in a minis competition organised by the Inner West Minis, which is an initiative of seven junior clubs located in the Inner West of Sydney. These competitions operate under the Pathways Laws and provide a series of age-specific modified rugby games.
The philosophy of the modified laws is focused around the player, making the game safer to ensure each player receives the greatest possible participation and enjoyment from playing the game of rugby. The aim of the modified rugby game is to develop the individual skills, fitness and team work of all players in accordance with their physical maturity and understanding of the game.
U6 and U7
At U6-U7 level, players play a 7-a- side TAG format (i.e. non-contact) where evasion is more important than “brawn”. This is intended to be a FUN and non-competitive introduction to the great game of rugby union and all players will develop fundamental skills, such as catch, pass, and running, which will be critical elements of the game as they progress through the age groups.
U8 and U9
At U8-U9 level, players are introduced to a contact (i.e. tackle) format, where great focus is placed on providing players with the correct technique to allow them to progress to this stage with confidence and with player safety and welfare front of mind.
All U6-U9 games take place on Saturday mornings starting at 8:30am (typically younger age groups) through to mid-morning. All games within the IWMC are played every week at St Luke’s Park – Gipps Street, Concord.
- U6 age groups play 2 X 10 minute halves
- U7-U8 age groups play 2 X 15 minute halves
- U9 age groups play 2 X 20 minute halves
Players and families love the comfortable familiarity and convenience of playing at a consistent venue each week.
Our U6-U9 age groups train every Wednesday evening at St Luke’s Park – Gipps Street, Concord from 5:30pm
